Giants, Raiders Crank Up Defense
Posted by: giants on 2010-01-31
Defense and a fumble played key roles in the Giants 7th win this season.
Tight defense by both teams in the first half which feature one trip in the red zone and a 25-yard FG by Giants' Fred Brady. Other than that, a Dee Franks fumble, and a couple punts accounted for the other 3 times the Giants offense was on the field. But the defense stymied the Raiders, and we led 3-0 at the half.
Crockpot worked his magic in the 3rd quarter, getting several Raider receivers involved in the passing game and scoring a quick TD. Eli Manning threw a pick-6 on a flat route, and the Giants were looking at a 14-3 deficit by the end of the 3rd quarter.
Giants Defense knocked out Raiders QB Vincent Cotton, and the backup, Rhett Bomar was far to inacurrate for the Raiders to get anything going in the 4th quarter. This opened the door for NYG, just a bit. We started the 4th with the ball and drove 90 yards, capped-off by a 35-yard TD run by Dee Franks plus a 2-pt conversion. Kick Returner Johnny Lee Higgins fumbled the ensuing kickoff and 4 plays later, Giants' K Fred Brady tied the game with a 37-yard FG.
The Giants were able to stop the Raiders just short of the 1st down marker, so Raiders punted from their own ~35 yard line. The Giants ensuing drive, stop-stop-corner route connection to Chuck Shelton for 25 yards on 3rd-N-Long play. Then, drove for the game-winning FG.
Great game Crock, as always. I know frustrating on your end.
I want to highlight Crock's forfeiture of one of those bogus Kick Catch Interference penalties called on the Giants in the 1st half. We've all had that happen to us, where a the kick returner leaves the spot where the ball will hit the ground, but a blocker is near the spot. Madden called it kick-catch interference and Crock declined giving him terrible field position, but was the right thing to do. Thanks bro ... top notched!
